Research Focus

 

We are highly interested in Green Energetic Materials (GEMs). There is an ever growing demand for environmentally benign and non-toxic energetic materials for storage and controlled release of energy. GEMs are energetic materials that are virtually free of environmental hazards and toxicity issues during the course of their production, storage, use, and disposal. Our general research interests range from inorganic main group chemistry, organo fluorine chemistry, polynitrogen and polyazido compounds, all the way to energy storage and material science. We are also very interested in X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, and quantum mechanical calculations.

Typical examples of Prof. Haiges' research during the past several years include:

  1. Synthesis and structural characterization of over 40 new polyazido species like W(N3)6, [W(N3)7]-, [WN(N3)4]-, Mo(N3)6, [Mo(N3)7]-, [MoN(N3)4]-, V(N3)4, [V(N3)6]-, [V(N3)6]2-, Nb(N3)5, [Nb(N3)6]-, [Nb(N3)7]2-, Ta(N3)5, [Ta(N3)6]-, [Ta(N3)7]2-, Se(N3)4, [Se(N3)5]-, [Se(N3)6]2-, Te(N3)4, [Te(N3)5]-, and [Te(N3)6]2-.
  2. Preparation and characterization of the polynitrogen compounds [N5]B(N3)4],[N5][P(N3)6], [N5][HF2], [N5][PF6], [N5][BF4], [N5][SO3F], [N3NOF][SbF6], and [N7O][SbF6]. It is worth noting that the energetic-nitrogen content of [N5][B(N3)4] (95.7 weight %) is among the highest ever recorded for solid nitrogen compounds.
  3. Preparation of the first oxidizer-balanced energetic ionic liquid for liquid monopropellant applications.
  4. Convenient preparation of trifluoromethanol from commercially available starting materials for the synthesis of trifluormethyl ethers and esters.
  5. Development of a new signal processing method for NMR spectroscopy.
  6. The preparation of [SO3NF2]- by direct fluorination of [SO3NH2]-. The utility of NaSO3NF2 as an alternative source of difluoramine in organic difluoramination reactions was demonstrated by the transformation of carbonyl into gem-bis(difluoramino) groups.
