Seminars

Seminars are held regularly in physical/theoretical, inorganic, organic and polymer chemistry. The department also holds large research colloquia featuring speakers of national and international stature from all branches of chemistry. Graduate students have the opportunity to meet with these speakers. Students are expected to attend seminars and colloquia; this is an integral part of graduate education.

Several other seminar series are designed specifically for graduate students. For incoming students, research presentations are given by the faculty at the beginning of the fall semester. These seminars acquaint students with the full range of research activities and opportunities in the department.

A graduate student research symposium is held annually in September on Catalina Island, 25 miles off the California coast. Student lectures and poster sessions fill mornings and evenings, with afternoons free for informal discussions, swimming, snorkeling and hiking.
