Upper Division Electives

What our students say: The upper division bio classes provide great added preparation for the MCAT. Having a detailed understanding of the processes of gene replication, transcription and translation is particularly helpful for the exam

--Monika Mehrens, PPP 2007

In recent years, medical schools have begun modifying some of their admissions requirements. While nearly all medical schools still require the eight courses that comprise the core curriculum, some medical schools now also recommend or require additional biology courses. Our students have the option of taking these additional courses during their time in the program at USC or elsewhere.

BISC 307L: Physiology Physiological functions of the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory, and urogenital systems of animals.
BISC 320L: Molecular Biology Structure and synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins;
molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes;
BISC 325: Genetics Transmission genetics and genotype/phenotype; mapping methods; complex traits; genetics of human disease and population genetics.
BISC 330L: Biochemistry Basic biochemical principles; classes of molecules, structure and function; cellular energetics

In addition to these courses, students may elect to take extra mathematics courses in order to fulfill needed requirements such as calculus or statistics.
